SE8097/01 The Wheeldale Roman Road This walk starts and finishes on what might be the best preserved piece of Roman road in northern Europe. For the first mile of the walk, you will be on (or beside) what is probably the foundations of a Roman road, joining the Cawthorne Roman Camp and the fort at Lease Rigg (near Grosmont).

The Wheeldale Roman Road is an enigmatic mile-long stretch of ancient road surrounded by wild and beautiful moorland, situated near both Goathland and Whitby. Although the exact origins of the road are unclear, it is widely believed to be of Roman origin, although it could date from a later or earlier period.

Wheeldale Roman Road, North York Moors When the Romans began their conquest of Celtic Britain in 43 AD, they found a haphazard collection of roads and paths, most connecting local fields and hamlets, but also some longer distance trade routes (e.g. along the North Downs in Kent, and the Icknield Way along the Chilterns into Norfolk).

It runs from an escarpment north of Pickering and passes by the Roman sites at Cawthorn and Lease Rigg. It was originally excavated between 1912 and 1920.
